Which Major Airlines Offer Military Discounts?

Military members, past and present, get an exclusive discount when you book with major airlines.  The average military discount ranges between 0-10% which is pretty significant as most flights cost several hundred dollars.  For more information, check out this list of six airline companies that offer a military discount when purchasing a ticket.

  1. American Airlines

American Airlines honors those who have served by allowing you to board early.  Contact American Airlines about a potential mark down in ticket prices as their military discount does vary depending on the flight.  You can reach their reservation department at 1-800-433-7300.  Besides a discount, they have a charity in place for anyone who wishes to donate. 1. United Airlines

United and United Express offer a 5% discount on all airline tickets when you enroll in their Veterans Advantage program.  It’s their way of showing appreciation to U.S. military veterans, active duty service, National Guard and Reserve military members.

Some restrictions do apply:

  1. Flights must originate out of the United States or Canada.
  2. The discount is not eligible for destinations outside of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central America or the Caribbean.
  3. There is a maximum of eight people to a reservation.
  4. This offer cannot be combined with most web offers or promotions.
  5. Discount is only applied to United airlines’ base fares, not including taxes.
  6. Eligible flights are marked on United.com.
  1. Southwest Airlines

Active duty and former military service members must contact Southwest Airlines in order to receive a discount on tickets.   Reach them by telephone at (800)-I-FLY-SWA.  Southwest does not offer the military discount when purchasing tickets online.  Tickets must be purchased through a Southwest representative.

  1. Delta Airlines

Delta is another airline that does not disclose how much their military discount is online.  To find out how much you can save, call Delta at (800)-221-1212 for booking assistance.  Aside from offering a price break on airline tickets, Delta also slashes prices on vacations booked by military members — up to $300 off.  They will even give you 500 bonus rewards points per person as a sign of their appreciation.  Delta Vacations offer over 300 destinations worldwide.  See more details of Delta’s military offer here.

  1. Frontier Airlines

Frontier does not offer discount airline tickets for military personnel. However, your first bag is free when you check your luggage. Military members can redeem their free bag in person only, when they arrive at the airport but must show valid military ID or be in uniform. The free bag for military members cannot be redeemed online via Frontier’s website.  You can reach Frontier for additional veteran and military discounts by phone at (801) 401-9000.

  1. Spirit Airlines

Spirit does not offer a military discount on airline tickets.  But active duty and veteran service members do receive two free checked bags plus a personal item.  Similar to Frontier’s military bag policy, they must arrive early enough to redeem their free luggage discount at the airport prior to departure.  Spirit also works hand and hand with the Wounded Warrior Project to offer free flights for those wounded in battle.

So remember, contact these following airlines to save more on your next flight.
